SpaceX's Market Valuation Soars
Elon Musk's aerospace company, SpaceX, has reportedly climbed to become the world's fifth most valuable firm, outperforming e-commerce giant Amazon. This shift occurred after a substantial increase in SpaceX's share price, just days after its public listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange. The company's valuation is now estimated at around $2.78 trillion (£2.1 trillion), while Jeff Bezos's Amazon is valued at approximately $2.66 trillion.
The surge in SpaceX's value coincided with its announcement to acquire AI coding startup Cursor for $60 billion. SpaceX confirmed it would take over Anysphere, Cursor's parent company, which specializes in artificial intelligence coding agents.
Investor Enthusiasm and Future Prospects
SpaceX has generated considerable investor interest due to its ambitious goals, which include deploying AI data centers in space and facilitating human colonization of Mars. Its public listing successfully raised $85.7 billion, a sum that contributed to Elon Musk's status as the world's first trillionaire. Since its initial public offering at $135 per share, the stock has climbed to $209.
Despite this impressive growth, some analysts have raised questions regarding the long-term sustainability of SpaceX's high share price, citing uncertainties about its future earnings. While Amazon is a widely recognized brand with a pervasive presence in daily life, SpaceX's direct impact on the general public is comparatively less.
Financial Performance Comparison
A notable disparity exists between the two companies' revenues and profits. In the first quarter of 2026, Amazon reported a profit of $30.3 billion, whereas SpaceX, a company focused on future-oriented endeavors, recorded a loss of $4.3 billion. For the year 2025, Amazon's sales reached approximately $716.9 billion, significantly higher than SpaceX's $18.67 billion. Investors, however, appear to be betting on SpaceX's potential future achievements, which extend beyond rocket manufacturing and launches to include Starlink internet satellites and an expanding presence in the AI sector.
Strategic AI Acquisition
The acquisition of Cursor is a strategic move for SpaceX as it seeks to enhance its AI capabilities. SpaceX and Cursor have maintained a partnership since April, when SpaceX secured the option to either purchase Cursor for $60 billion or compensate them $10 billion for their collaborative work. Cursor's technology, similar to that of OpenAI and Anthropic, utilizes AI to automate code writing, a prominent application of artificial intelligence.
This integration aims to bolster SpaceX's AI division, xAI, which developed the Grok chatbot, in its efforts to compete with other industry players. In April, SpaceX stated, "The combination of Cursor's leading product and distribution to expert software engineers with SpaceX's million H100 equivalent Colossus training supercomputer will allow us to build the world's most useful models." Cursor's technology is utilized by major corporations such as Stripe, Adobe, and Nvidia, with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang reportedly commending it as his preferred enterprise AI service. The acquisition is expected to conclude by the end of September, with Cursor's shareholders receiving $60 billion in SpaceX shares.
